The meteorite from Mauerkirchen is, with its documented 21,3kg weight, the largest stone meteorite to have fallen on the former Bavarian territory.

That was 250 years ago on 20 November 1768. At that time, scholars puzzled over where this stone that fell from the sky came from and proposed various, from today’s perspective, bizarre theories about it. They ranged from hail, strong winds to volcanism. When Ernst Flores Friedrich Chladni presented his theory of cosmic origin, he was an exotic but creating the basis of modern meteorite research.

As part of the 250th anniversary of this first documented meteorite fall in Bavaria, the two largest pieces of the “Mauerkirchen” distributed in over 70 collections worldwide can be admired at the Munich Show.
